Steve
A real guy with unreal ability
Steve is an artist and a craftsman. From his very first creative course, people easily recognized his passion and ability. “I liked the idea of arranging elements in the photo, and using space and light to bring out the realness in a subject,” he says. “Plus, I’m an active people person, and commercial photography is about working with people to capture their creative communication vision.”
Steve’s Iowa roots keep him grounded and shows in the unvarnished, authentic character of his photographs. He can look at a subject, quickly see its core essence, then bring that out in the shot.
In photography, control is critical. Steve can craft the lighting of a shot to give just the results he needs for his clients. “Good lighting can sculpt the subject and make the subtle textures stand out so it feels real,” he says. “I take the extra time to get the lighting right. “
When Steve isn't shooting professionally, he’s often taking snapshots for his kids’ sports teams, which he also coaches. Steve is himself active in volleyball, water sports, home improvement, and the many sports his kids are involved in.
Favorite artist:
"M.C. Escher. I like the flow of his work. It’s a lot like what I try to do with photography: create a flow with the image, so your eye continually moves and remains interested."
Most interesting shoot:
"It was for Orkin Pest Control. They built a furnished house in Atlanta and filled it with bugs, which were crawling everywhere. I shot through cutaway walls to capture the bug activity. I was scratching for days afterwards just thinking about it."
